24/11/2011/ Lisbon named European City of the Year 2012 |
Lisbon has recently again proved its worth by conquering more stripes. This week Portugal’s charismatic capital was promoted among London’s executives after recently being distinguished by the Academy of Urbanism as European City of the Year 2012.
Last Friday Lisbon was announced European City of the Year 2012 by the Academy of Urbanism in a ceremony that took place in the UK, in the Grand Connaught Rooms, London.
It was attended by Lisbon deputy mayor, architect Manuel Salgado.
The Portuguese city beat off stiff competition from other distinctive European cities in the shape of fellow finalists Oslo and Gothenburg. It emerged victorious after votes were cast by around 500 academics.
A team of academics visited Lisbon in August this year to evaluate the capital. Their evaluation was based on four categories of municipal policies: new practices, assumed centralisation, an administration that multiplies choices and new paths to, and management of, opportunity.
Certain architectural projects, such as the renovation of Mouraria and urban projects along the riverside were also taken into account.
Formed in 2006 the Academy of Urbanism is an autonomous organisation, politically independent, made up by a multidisciplinary group of thinkers and decision-makers of the social, political, economic and environmental spectrums from across Great Britain and Ireland.
It aims to advance the understanding and practice of urbanism by promoting a culture of scholarship through evidence-based inquiry, providing an inclusive forum for dialogue across all disciplines, sharing knowledge with the community and peers and nurturing, recognising and rewarding excellence in achievement
In related news, on Thursday, this week, Lisbon held a promotional event in London to promote its growing status as a privileged place for business and investment.
Organised by the Portuguese Embassy in London, Lisbon - Exploring an Emergent Atlantic Business Hub brought together British and Portuguese businessmen and women and included speeches by Lisbon Mayor António Costa, Lisbon Councillor for Economy and Innovation, Graça Fonseca, Zeinal Bava, CEO of Portugal Telecom, Eric van Leuven, Managing Partner of Cushman & Wakefield Portugal, as well as chief representatives of easyJet who revealed their main reasons for choosing Lisbon for the company’s latest hub.
